Andrew Hey MA LPCC

About me

Hello! I am owner, co-founder and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor here at RESET. I provide individual, couples, and family therapy through in person or video chat therapy sessions. My journey to working in the field of mental health has been long and unique. After college, I went directly to medical school for a year intending to work as a physician. I soon discovered that I was more interested in psychology than physiology, and I left medical school for graduate studies in Counseling Psychology. Additionally, after leaving medical school I was able to pursue my other passion in the performing arts. When I am not seeing clients, I perform regularly as a professional Actors Equity Association actor here in the Twin Cities. I have appeared in shows at theaters such as the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, Theatre Latté Da, and the Ordway Center.

I feel that my experiences in my acting career and my brief medical training lend a unique perspective to my counseling sessions for empathizing with a wide range of people and issues. I enjoy working with my clients to help them identify their own strengths to empower them to reach their specific goals. I am laid back, informal, and non-judgmental in my approach.  In over 5 years of counseling work I have experience with in-home counseling and private practice counseling serving adults, young adults, adolescents and schools.

When I am not working, I enjoy being active outside and diligently following our Twin Cities sports teams.

Approach — What do sessions look like?

My approach as a counselor typically includes three stages for treatment: Exploration, Insight, and Action. Exploration is time for the client and I to get to know each other and for exploring the issues that brought the client to counseling. Insight means helping the client to discover new things about their life. Finally, armed with this new information, the client can decide to take Action and develop new ways of interacting with their environment.

To help clients accomplish their goals, I base my counseling strategy on a Person-Centered approach. This is a non-directive, non-judgemental, and positive form of counseling in which I provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to learn about themselves and explore their issues. I also believe in spending time helping clients to appreciate their strengths in order to empower clients to reach their personal goals.

From this Person-Centered base, I also employ Gestalt techniques, which include creative expression interventions for helping clients to express their true feelings, and Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, an evidence based strategy for helping clients to challenge unhelpful thought and behavioral patterns.

Additionally, I lean on my passion and professional experience in music and theatre for creative therapeutic expression.

Finally, I am now offering "Walking Counseling" sessions that incorporate light walking and/or stretching during the session to facilitate mental and physical health along with increased emotional expression. Ask about Golf Sessions!
